An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Derbyshire Constabulary as a Detective Staff Investigator.

The role of Detective Staff Investigator (DSI) is a dynamic, tough yet rewarding role, where you’ll be conducting serious and complex investigations. This can include interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects in relation to investigations.

Our DSI's are essential to the organisation, and cover a wide variety of departments and teams, such as:

  • CID (Criminal Investigation Department)
  • Public Protection
  • PSD (Professional Standards Department)
  • Crime Support
  • EMSOU (East Midlands Special Operations Unit)

The role is vast and the opportunities to investigate are endless. You could be dealing with robbery one day only to be confronted with a potential murder the next. DSI's play an important role in helping victims find closure, and bringing offenders to justice.

What you’ll be doing

  • Developing and maintaining investigative strategies.
  • Interrogating available Intelligence and information sources.
  • Assessing the factors likely to impact on the investigation and taking appropriate action.

The must haves

  • To hold a role relevant degree such as Criminology, Law, Social Work, Psychology, Teaching, Engineering, Professional Policing, or a recognised investigative qualification achieved through practical application. This could include PIP2 but not PIP1.
  • or a recognised investigative qualification achieved through practical application (this may include PiP2, but not PiP1) is also essential for the role.

As part of the training for the role of DSI, you’ll need to complete a mandatory PiP1 training course. Following completion of the initial course you’ll gain some experience in our Custody Investigations Unit (CIU), whilst working on your PiP1 portfolio. Once accredited to PiP1, you’ll then work on your gaining your PiP2 accreditation, for which you’ll be required to pass the National Investigators Exam (NIE). The whole process from starting as a DSI will take around 2-3 years until you are accredited to PiP2.

Once fully accredited, DSI’s can be moved between departments to enhance skills, and share investigative experience, therefore applicants must be willing to work flexibly in terms of location, hours and placement. A full UK Driving Licence must also be held.
